Challenge09 #6 – Mix in 10 New Blogs and Blend Well

blogging-recipeOur classroom has really been cooking  up something special with our blogging. Last Friday, I posted a podcast that indicated we had been visited by 38 countries. By Monday morning, that number was up to 47!!

We keep a record of these countries by printing out and adding a 4 x 6 flag representation to the world map that hangs right outside our intermediate office.  We want to thank you all for visiting and leaving comments, and Walmart wants to thank you because their sales of printer ink cartridges has increased since we began adding those flags to our blog back in February! =-)

The Blog Challenge 09 for this week is to add 10 new blogs to our blog roll and to separate our blog roll into at least two categories.  This is a recipe that we can certainly follow.

We have a specific category for the Blogging Challenge09.  Here you will find Mrs. Wyatt’s blog, Technology in Our Classroom.  As we make connections with other classrooms, we are adding them under the category, Blogs We LOVE to Visit. We do have our favorites and are trying right now to connect with Room 8@Melville.  The teacher posted a comment that they had never heard of Peeps!! We want to ship them some Peeps, so we are hoping to receive a mailing address through email to me at [email protected] in time for Easter.

Something that has really helped my students when visiting blogs is adding a description for each link.  When students put their cursor on top of the link,  a description of what kind of content, location, and grade level of the blog appears.  I also like this feature because it minimizes my search time when I am trying to locate a specific post.

We are going to clean up our sidebar by listing fewer comments and posts. We are also going to clarify the category, Favorite Connections, by changing it to Hometown Connections. These links are to blogs with authors within our district.   My students will be adding more blogs to this category very soon because now others teachers on our campus are wanting to know, “What is going on with this blogging?”, and, “How do we get involved?”

Quite a good recipe for the integration of technology applications, don’t you think?rat1

Challenge09 #5 – Making Changes that Made a Difference

computer_animated_globeHave you visited other blogs and left comments to students in other countries? Would you like to continue blogging? How does it make you feel to know that other students and your parents are reading what you are writing at school? What interesting things have you learned about from visiting other blogs? How do you overcome the challenges of reading blogs that are written by students who speak another language?

These are some of the questions that we asked our students. Their answers were recorded on video and you can see and also hear them here.

The students had good answers for these questions, but I would like to share a little bit more.  As a resource teacher, I jump on every opportunity to showcase my students’ abilities. When I returned from the 2009 TCEA Conference, I was convinced that my students could improve a multitude of skills through blogging. There were no blogs on our intermediate campus, so we would be the pioneers in this technological adventure.  Were we up for it? You bet!

We wanted the other students to notice what we were doing and ask their teachers why they had no classroom blog.  In a short time, our students had visitors from over 35 countries and over 200 comments posted to their blog.  Every Thursday, these students proudly wear their C-O Connections blogging t-shirts.
our-bloggersOther students acknowledge them by name now. They possess an ownership for their learning and a confidence that they did not have before blogging.  Parents are beginning to post in reply to their child’s posts and have subscribed to our blog. The process of blogging has brought a closeness between school and community, and more importantly, between child and parent.

Making this change in our classroom curriculum has truly made a difference in the lives of each of my students, and some of them will never be the same.

Challenge09 #4 – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

globe-inside-a-light-bulb-giclee-print-c12351362How do you reduce, reuse and recycle at your home or school?

That  was the question posed to us by the Blog Challenge09, and we intend to answer that question. In January, we had a Recycling Fair at our school. Each class prepared a poster and targeted one way in which we could reduce, reuse, and recyle. Parents were invited and the community has since started a recycling center.

On March 28th @ 8:30 we have another chance to help our planet by taking part in Earth Hour.  We need you to commit to turning off your lights for one hour.

Have you ever wonder just how many lights are used around the entire world?  How much energy could we save if we just turned them off when we are not using them?

Click on the bulb below to take a closer look at all the lights. Then tell me one thing you could plan to do in the dark at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night, March 28th.

Challenge09 #3 – This IS Virtually Where I Live

texas_regions

We would really love for each of our blog visitors to visit us here in Texas, but we know that it is not possible for some of you to physically travel to the United States. For that reason, we are excited about this week’s Blog Challenge09. It gives us a chance to clear up some of the misconceptions about our vast state. Indeed, Texas was once its own independent republic, and it is a fact that the three states of Connecticut, Delaware, and Rhode Island can all three fit inside our largest county. So, we hope you brought your good walking boots because you are in for a long hike.

Pineywoods by Joshua:

We live in the Pineywoods area of Texas. There are a lot of pine trees here. There are a lot of lakes, too. I like to go fishing at Lake of the Pines.barbedwire3

Gulf Coast by Brittany:

The Gulf Coast is next to the Gulf of Mexico. Mrs. Cranford went to Galveston to go on a cruise. Houston is a town in the Gulf Coast and it has the Johnson Space Center and the Houston Zoo. I would like to go there.barbedwire3

South Texas Plains by Adrian:

The southern border of Texas is Mexico. My family is Mexican but I cannot speak Spanish. The Alamo is in San Antonio. A lot of people go to see the Alamo.barbedwire3

Hill Country by Jennifer:

Hill Country is in the middle of Texas. The capital of Texas is in Hill Country. It is Austin.barbedwire3

Prairies and Lakes by Colton:

Dallas is a big city that is in this region. There is a lot to do there. You can go to a Dallas Cowboy football game or see a Texas Ranger baseball game. You can even go to Six Flags Over Texas and ride the roller coasters. If I went to Dallas, I would go to Texas Motor Speedway.barbedwire3

Big Bend Country by Brian:

If I went to West Texas, I would go to Big Bend National Park. In this region of Texas, there are mountains, deserts, and rivers. One of the largest cities in this region is El Paso.barbedwire3

Panhandle Plains by Erick:

This area is called the Panhandle because it looks just like the handle of a pan. There you can visit Palo Duro Canyon State Park. If you drive down the famous Route 66, you will see a lot of things.barbedwire3

Our school day in photos by Alex:

Every morning we start in the gym reading. If you are late you have to go to the office and see Mrs. Drennan. Our principal works in the office. Outside the office you can see the map of our blog visitors. When we go upstairs to our class we turn at the big Joe Roughneck. We go to SOI in the morning to exercise. We go to computer lab on Monday. We go to Music, PE, and Library too. We eat lunch in the cafeteria. Before we eat, we go outside to the playground. We mostly work in Mrs. Cranford’s room. Sometimes we work with Mrs. Odom.

Challenge09 #1 – Introduce Yourself

locationThe first of the Blog Challenge09 has been issued and we are ready to rise to the occasion. The task is to introduce ourselves. Here in this post, I would like to link you to some interesting facts and trivia about our great state of Texas located here in the United States of America. I had to include that we were here in the USA because we have been fortunate enough to receive visitors from all over the world!

Our class is a class of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.  We are the first intermediate class to blog at our campus, and we hope to encourage others to follow very soon.  A few teachers have started a personal blog, but we hope to show by example that getting the students involved in blogging is a invaluable educational tool.  Where my students once hated to write, they are now going to our Blog roll and posting comments in their spare time – FOR FUN!

Student blogging has been and continues to be a productive weekly activity.

This week our students will be adding their personal introductions to the Meet Our Class page. We hope that you will take the time to read all about them and leave them your comments.
