Last week, several of our teachers were asked to present at TCEA in Austin, Texas. I have received several emails asking where my presentation slides were posted on my blog. Well the truth is that I uploaded my slides to www.slideshare.net , but did not post them here on my blog. For those seeking them out, I will post them all here. Please feel free to use with your staff.
Practicing Measurements
This post will provide students with the chance to do some measurement practice. Click on the picture below and you will be asked to guide the ant to the picnic by measuring the distance between the markers. Click on the word “Ruler” in order to use the online inch ruler. You may rotate the ruler by clicking on the icon at the end of the ruler which turns it. This game will help you when you get ready to measure perimeter on your TAKS test. Have fun!
Snow Day – School Closed!
Snow Day today and our schools are closed due to the bad road conditions. So what will you do today? Let me recommend that you go to Highlight’s Magazine link here and play a game of Hidden Picture “Snowy Feast”. When you finish, you might want to create your own online snowflake at Popular Front Snowdays. Enter your FIRST NAME ONLY – Remember Digital Safety always! On the line that asks, “Where are you from?” just enter “White Oak”. I will be looking throughout the day to see if I can find your snowflake. See if you can find mine, “Mrs. Cranford.”
We will be making up this weather day on Monday, February 21st. It will be very important that you be there. Enjoy your day!
Final Challenge#10
The final challenge of the year is upon us, Challenge #10. This challenge asks us to audit our own blog by answering some questions. We will do just that right now.
- How many posts did you write? We have written 24 posts since we began the challenge in September.
- How many were school based, your own interests or set by the challenge? Of those posts, thirteen were challenge related, eight were school based, and three were of personal interest.
- How many comments did you receive from classmates, teachers or overseas students? We were really fortunate enough this year to have received 101 total comments.
- Which post received the most comments? Why do you think that happened? The posts that received the most comments were Christmas Crafts and Top 100 Classroom Blogs. We think that Christmas Crafts received several comments because it gave helpful information at a time when making crafts as decorations or gifts was appropriate due to the coming holidays. The Top 100 Classroom Blogs received comments mostly from our local readers because it was quite an honor to have been chosen for that listing, and those commenting wanted our students to know that they were proud of them.
- Which post did you enjoy writing the most and why? The post that we enjoyed bringing to our readers was Open Season. The reason was it was personal and unique. We shared with students something that they might not have otherwise experienced. One teacher stated it was like taking a field trip.
- Did you change blog themes at all and why? We did not change our blog theme because of a couple of reasons. Our students designed the heading back when we began and it is very special to us. Secondly, our school themes are limited, and none that we previewed fit our current needs. We did, however, create a new heading as suggested in this challenge and now exhibit a seasonal theme.
- How many widgets do you have? Do you think this is too many or not enough? We have a total of 29 widgets. Yes that does seem like a lot of extras, but we use our blog as the center of our curriculum resource. We have 20 widgets in the left sidebar which the students use on a regular basis for their Moodle lessons, AR reading tests, and language arts activities. The remaining widget in the left sidebar were added as a part of the Challenge. We have 9 in the right sidebar which include subscriptions, introductions, search engines, our podcasts, and various blogrolls. It is important that these links be here for our students so that we can move through instruction in an efficient manner.
We are already participants in The Blogger’s Cafe challenges, and our blog is listed in their blogroll as well. We look forward to participating in the next Blog Challenge and hope that we can involve other classrooms here on our campus.
We Give to You the Gift of Reading
Our students have been participating in the Twelve Books of Christmas. In our classroom, it was our goal to complete twelve books on the subject of Christmas before we dismissed for the holidays. That goal has been achieved, and we are so proud of their accomplishment.
The students have chosen The Mouse’s Christmas to do a green screen project. Each student read a section of the story in front of our new green screen provided by the technology department. (A special thanks to Scott Floyd and Michael Gras) It was a learning experience for each of us and one that we are sure to repeat very soon. For those viewers who are blocked from Youtube, please watch our virtual story on our Virtual Roughneck podcast blog.
Please enjoy The Mouse’s Christmas as presented to you by our fifth graders, Alex, Adrian, and Kristen.
All We Want for Christmas
The sights of Christmas are everywhere right now. Lights brighten the streets at night, and trees can be seen in the windows of most houses. All the children are making their Christmas lists, hoping Santa will bring that one special toy. To help Santa with his job, some of our students created a slide show to let him know exactly what they wanted. We hope you enjoy our presentation.
FROM OUR HEARTS TO YOURS, WE WISH YOU A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A BLESSED NEW YEAR!
Named in “Top 100 Classroom Blogs”
The C-O Connections has been named on the list of “Top 100 Classroom Blogs” published by Online Degrees. “My goal,” according to Alexis Brett of Online Degrees, “was to make this list a sort of ‘resource guide’ for other teachers so they would be inspired to start their own classroom blogs as well.” She goes on to say, “I wish we would have done classroom blogging when I was in elementary school!”
Our students do love it and the connections it has helped them to make beyond our small school district. Thank you for this honor and we will do our best to continue to inspire others to blog.
What’s Your Favorite?
We are at mid-year and have already had several school holidays. We were wondering, “What’s your favorite holiday?” Please help us our with our Blog Challenge 8 by completing this poll. We are interested in graphing the outcome on bar graphs, line graphs, tally mark charts, and pictographs. Thank you for your time.
