September and Apples

When September rolls around, we begin to think of Johnny Appleseed. He was born on September 26, 1775, and his real name was John Chapman. His nickname came from his travels across the wilderness and his practice of planting apple trees all along the way. Listen to the story below about Johnny Appleseed, and then enjoy playing some of the apple games as well as testing your knowledge of Johnny Appleseed on the “Who was Johnny Appleseed?” link.

Keeping the Torch Burning!

The Summer Olympics will soon kick-off in London, England, on July 27, but the festivities began several weeks ago. On May 19, the Olympic Torch was lit and the country began to follow 70 days of 70 routes of the Torch Relay. I was personally invested in this tradition because my first cousin, Don Raborn, was chosen to be one of the torch bearers. This was quite an honor for our entire family and one that we will not soon forget.

However, Don has always been a great source of pride for our family. Don and his wife, Staci, began the Jake Owen Raborn Foundation in 2006, shortly after their four-year-old son, Jake, died of a rare liver cancer. The Jake Owen Raborn Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to financially supporting families enduring pediatric cancer, as well as providing financial support to organizations and facilities that care for families enduring pediatric cancer. For this family, the torch has been burning for over six years now.

I Spy a QR Code

Mrs. Odom and I just returned from Tots and Technology in Galveston where we presented Mrs. Peery’s Prezi on I Spy a QR Code. If you have ever wanted to use QR codes in your classroom please take a look at this presentation to get some wonderful ideas.  You can also find out how Mrs. Peery used QR codes to create a Treasure Hunt for her students.  Be watching our hallways and classrooms this year for these specialized codes.  You will most likely see them on some of your assessments.

Professional Learning Community Kicks Off

The staff of White Oak ISD was addressed by several of its peers on Thursday, May 31st, to kick off two important phases of collaborative learning, Project Based Learning and Professional Learning Community. Teachers from each campus were given opportunities to share the higher level thinking involved in PBL and also to showcase over 90+ Web 2.0 tools and apps. It was impressive to see the level of instruction that our students receive from our White Oak ISD teachers. Equally impressive was the development of problem-solving skills and collaboration that our students, from primary through high school, demonstrated through “voice and choice” presentations

Resources for the Web2.0 tools and apps are linked to the image above. Several of the resources are already posted on the new PLC Blog.
